Hi! My family has quite a bit of history around the Turon River, particularly the areas surrounding Sofala. They were the Bottrells.

I came across this site’s map of the Turon River goldfields around Sofala and I’m grateful to be able to locate many of the places my ancestors were born, married and died. Wallaby Rocks, New Zealand Point and Golden Point all feature in my family’s history.

However, one place along the river I’m having trouble locating. It was known as Poorman’s Point (sometimes Poor Mans Point).

Does anybody know where along the river that was? It doesn’t seem to feature on any map I can find.

I am trying to find information on my great grandfather, John Reynolds, who was supposedly born in Green Valley, near Hill End, probably around 1874. His father was Charles Reynolds and his mother Jessie Silk, according to his marriage certificate. His father was deceased at the time of his marriage and his mother may have also gone by Jessie Wilson or Jessie Reynolds. As my grandfather is dark skinned, most likely aboriginal, it is possible that John was as well. I cannot find any birth record or certificate anywhere so any information would be greatly appreciated.

This may be a long shot, but any chance was Rebecca Gardner living in Bathurst in 1840? If so, there is a chance she was the witness on my great great grandmother’s marriage certificate.

My link is Peter and Elizabeth Williams. Peter was a miner in Redruth, Cornwall. He married Elizabeth in March 1854 and emigrated to Australia later that year in search of gold. In the Sofala Parish records on this site, it shows that Peter and Elizabeth were in Erskine Flat in 1860 when their son William was born. 4 years later, Edward Williams was born. That is my great grandfather.

Hi,
I’m researching the Carroll family of Green Valley, Sallys Flat, Tambaroora area.
His name was Peter Carroll and he married a Margaret O’Brien. Their children I believe were Ann, Thomas, Catherine, Patrick Joseph, Margaret, Bridget. My husband’s family is a descendant of Patrick Joseph.
I have seen him as a labourer and a newspaper article quoting him as digging for gold and being led to a body in the bush (if this is the same Peter Carroll).

I must have heard this story when I toured Craigmoor in 2002—but that was a long time ago. I do have vague memories of seeing that bird. It was another scrap of this tantalising story. I’m really pleased to have been able to flesh it out.

The next challenge is to try and track down who “Black Nat” was—although the likelihood of his name being on the passenger lists associated with the Ceres is a lot less. I read on Trove that he was once in partnership with “Northumberland Jimmy”, James Brown, on a gold claim, so maybe there are records associated with that.

Hi Margaret, Thanks for sharing all that work on James Wiseman Marshall. Makes great reading. His story is referred to when doing the tours of Craigmoor in Hill End but this puts it all in context. Are you aware of the story of the small crafted bird, hanging from one of the light fittings in the front room of Craigmoor, as a constant reminder of the birds that the shipwrecked passengers were forced to eat?
